2024 Horace Fleming Scholarship Recipient

The FOURTH annual recipient of the Horace Fleming Scholarship is MS. KINZLY GOOTMAN. This award was presented on MAY 30, 2024 during the SPRING AthleticS Award CEREMONY.

Loyalty. Impact. Determination. Committed. Caring. Organized. Mentor. Thoughtful. Supportive. Intelligent. Disciplined. Passionate. Creative. Team Player. Curious. Leader. Deserving.

Kinzly was a 4-year starter on the Jackson-Reed Girls Varsity Soccer Team and a two-time team captain. She navigated team challenges and helped lead the team to the finals of the DCSAA playoffs, where she was named to the DCSAA all-star team for the second year in a row. Kinzly’s passion for soccer extends to the community where she plays club soccer year-round. She organized fundraising clinics and coached summer camps. She loves teaching and mentoring others, including experiences like coaching toddler soccer and being a high school peer tutor. She has also coached young girls, empowering them to play soccer by equipping them with both skills and confidence.

Academically, she was president of the Health Sciences Academy at Jackson-Reed and excelled with a 4.0 GPA. She also served as the Jackson-Reed softball manager and joined the Ultimate Frisbee team.

Whether with her travel soccer club or at Jackson-Reed, Kinzly represents the values Coach Horace Fleming hoped to support and develop in students. Congratulations! Show Case Western Reserve University how Tigers do it!

2022 Horace Fleming Scholarship Recipient

The third annual recipient of the Horace Fleming Scholarship is Mr. Jahari Miller. This award was presented on June 9, 2022 during the Wilson Athletic ESPY Awards.

Like Coach Fleming, Jahari plans to major in Education while continuing to play collegiate sports. He has been guided by consistency, resilience, and virtuosity, which are evident in his many accomplishments.  He is recognized as DCIAA Boys Outdoor Track Runner of the Year, DCSAA Outdoor Boy’s Track MVP, DCIAA 100 and 200 meters title holder, DCSAA champion in the 100 and 400 meters, and a Nike Indoor Nationals qualifier.

Additionally, Jahari earned the ranks of Captain, Sergeant 1, and Executive Officer in JROTC while he participated in varsity football, lacrosse, track & field and AAU basketball. He holds several Wilson records -- Indoor 300M, Indoor 500M, Outdoor 100M and Outdoor 200M school records -- four varsity letters in Track and Field (outdoor and indoor), four letters in Lacrosse, and three letters in football.

Jahari’s ultimate goal is to become an educational advocate for students with unique learning styles.  As he launches his college career at Saint Mary’s University and continues to run track, Jahari’s supporters believe his ability to self-advocate, lead others, and remain mentally strong should serve him well in this next chapter. We agree!
